Cultural Differences in Human Computer Interaction: Results from Two Online Surveys

چکیده
This paper describes a method to obtain quantitatively discriminating cultural interaction indicators and their values for cross-cultural Human Computer Interaction (HCI) design as preparatory work for cross-cultural adaptive navigation and multi-media systems. The method has been implemented in a tool for cross-cultural HCI analysis. Two online studies temporally displaced by one year using this tool, regarding cultural adaptability exemplified by use cases of navigation systems, revealed differences in interaction behaviour that depend on the cultural background of the users. The results will be presented and discussed to demonstrate the difficulties, but also the importance to get the cultural differences in HCI to clear the way for cultural adaptability. 1 Determining Cultural Differences in HCI as First Step to Cultural Adaptability To be able to adapt navigation systems manually (adaptation) or automatically (adaptability) to the cultural needs of the user, the first step is to investigate what must be adapted, i.e. to find out the differences in the cultural needs of the users and hence the cultural differences in HCI on all levels of HCI localization (surface, functionality, and interaction). This is still one of the largest explanation gaps in cross-cultural HCI design, which has to be bridged today. Here areas like presentation of information (e. g. colours, time and date format, icons, font size) and language (e. g. font, direction of writing, naming) or dialog design (e. g. menu strucPublished in: OSSWALD, Achim; STEMPFHUBER, Maximilian; WOLFF, Christian (eds.) A Link Prediction Method Based on Learning Automata in Social Networks
Nowadays, online social networks are considered as one of the most important emerging phenomena of human societies. In these networks, prediction of link by relying on the knowledge existing of the interaction between network actors provides an estimation of the probability of creation of a new relationship in future. A wide range of applications can be found for link prediction such as electro...
متن کاملCultural Communication Idiosyncrasies in Human-Computer Interaction
In this work, we investigate whether the cultural idiosyncrasies found in humanhuman interaction may be transferred to human-computer interaction. With the aim of designing a culture-sensitive dialogue system, we designed a user study creating a dialogue in a domain that has the potential capacity to reveal cultural differences. The dialogue contains different options for the system output acco...

The present study compares the performance of two TEFL reading classes: one taking place in a regular classroom and the other held in a computer lab, with the learners practicing reading online. The results of an independent samples t-test showed that the difference between the learners’ scores on their reading comprehension post-tests and pretests did not differ statistically significantly fro...
متن کامل6 toward an Hci Theory of Cultural Cognition
With the increasing demand for global communication between countries, it is imperative that we understand the importance of national culture in human communication on the World Wide Web (WWW). As we consider the vast array of differences in the way we think, behave, assign value, and interact with others, culture becomes a focal point in research of online communication. More than ever, cultur...
